Philosophy
Being human comes with challenges: stress, painful emotions, and the potential for diagnosable mental health problems. By understanding these challenges as problems of being human instead of personal failings, we can ditch the self-judgement and move to constructive problem solving. Therapy focuses on understanding how your human brain, body, and emotions work, and then implementing science based strategies to work with this reality. Whether you are going through a rough patch or dealing with significant mental health concerns, therapy can help you achieve your goals and move towards the life you want.
About Dr. McGugan
The advantage of individual therapy is that it can be tailored specifically to your goals, preferences, personality, and area(s) difficulty. As such, I do not strictly follow mannualized treatment protocols. Instead I work with clients to develop a strong “case conceptualization” or theory of the problem, and then use my education and experience to draw from a number of different theoretical orientations to provide my clients with the therapy I believe will benefit them the most. I draw heavily from cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) while integrating principles and tools from solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive processing therapy for PTSD (CPT) and compassion focused therapy (CFT).
